Hailing from South Carolina, Joseph Herbst is paving his way as an avid composer and arranger in the jazz world, combining his years of classical saxophone studies under internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Joe Lulloff, with his active involvement in traditional and modern jazz. Yet, he is equally adept in a variety of styles, including funk, rock, gospel, avant-garde, and classical. Joseph has studied composition and arranging under Etienne Charles and Diego Rivera and has had his arrangements performed by many world-class musicians, including Etienne Charles, Rodney Whitaker, Mark Whitfield, and Harvey Mason, as well as commissions by Rodney Whitaker for the Dr. Phillips Jazz Orchestra. As a saxophonist, Joseph first studied under renowned recording artist Doug Norwine before attending the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities. Joseph then studied alto and baritone saxophone under Diego Rivera while pursuing a Jazz Studies degree at Michigan State University.
